Holidays are upon us and updates to life...
Where I last left off was toying with the idea of applying to the masters in biotechnology program at the university of wisconsin.
Since then, I have submitted my application and now await submission of my letters of recommendation. That and an acceptance letter are all that stand between me and attending graduate school next fall!
In other news, I had my one meeting with Olga, the stranger, and had not heard from her until I received an email on Saturday inviting me to an event at the Sequoia library. This event showcased some singing, russian music from authentic instruments, and some russian folk tales plus displays and russian treats. I tried this type of russian soda (i think) made from rye which had a unique flavor, and there was also some russian candy.
It was a very interesting event and I learned a lot. The music was folksy but comforting and the displays were neat. We met Olga's husband Vladimir too and got to spend some time chatting. They even invited us over for board games once Sergey and Amanda came home.
Fast forward to my vacation week and thus far I have been productive. Finished West Wing, and am working on finishing a fair amount of library and personal books.
Today I was invited for a tour of the Madison Science Museum with Olga, Amanda, Sergey, Sergey's brother and some other people. It was a great experience and the museum was really well designed. I'm wondering if I can't volunteer and help out as it would be neat to bring some neuroscience aspects to the museum somehow.
I was also invited over on Monday for board games and Russian food and my mom and isaac were also invited. Amanda's dad will be going so it will kind of like a mini reunion and it will be cool for my mom to experience the russian aspects of things!
Other than that, trying to get some wedding planning accomplished and continuing to work on my Russian everyday.
paka!

A slight stray from the path
I still would like to end up in the drug development field but I may approach it from a different pathway...
Two weeks ago now, I attended an open house for a Masters in Biotechnology program here on campus. This opened my eyes to an opportunity to segue into the field and industry but with a shorter time span than many years of a PhD.
This program will allow me to better develop my molecular bench techniques and enhance my repertoire for the business and law foundation of the development process. The program will also facilitate great leaps in my ability to convey the essential knowledge necessary for striking deals and grow my confidence so I can be a more valuable asset in my current organization.
The growth mindset that I have allows for many ideas to flourish but until they are a pitch on a napkin they are simply dreams that come and go. The Masters in Biotechnology will help lay the groundwork for collaboration of new ideas and solutions to the way I approach problems.
In short, this is the best way for me to segue into the industry and gain the skills and abilities to really advance myself forward both as a motivated learner and in my career.
I have also taken attempts to go beyond my comfort zone in having face to face confrontational conversation with my boss to resolve issues within the program. Being able to convey the issues at hand but also suggesting solutions allowed for a way to directly put out my concerns but also provide a platform for improvement. I also stepped outside my introverted self and through networking met with a complete stranger in person to continue to develop my Russian language skills.
This coincided with the launch of the DUOLINGO application's new addition of Russian to their language laboratory and I now am on a three day streak of bettering my skill in that department.
I hope that with my new found degree in biotechnology that I can couple this with my love of language and travel and pursue some growth opportunities abroad to put my newly acquired skills into practice.

Forward Progress
Friday, I was eligible to enroll in classes again for the Fall semester. Unfortunately, for whatever reason, I could not enroll in Physiology 335 as I had hoped. Genetics 466 was my back up and that will be the course I take this fall to maintain student status in the event I might be able to still get in to physiology in the spring.
This fall will be busy as the following are on my calendar:
Class MWF 1:20
Discussion M 3:30
Frisbee at Werner Park Tuesdays at 7pm
Soccer with ASB Wednesdays
Other goals for this fall include sitting the GRE, perhaps touring a facility or speaking with someone in the field, continuing to shorten my list of programs I'd like to apply to, and reading more about the topic to better understand my interests.

Introduction
I write this introduction with an end goal of a career in the drug development and pharmaceutical industry.
I am a long ways from that...
I am 28 and attempting to fulfill my return to school. After years of trying to figure out what I want to do, I have decided that my skill set and interest levels match up with the pursuit of a pharmacology/pharmaceutical sciences PhD.
An arduous and intense journey unravels before me, but I have the most determination and motivation that I think I ever will to ignite the fire that will carry me through the process.
I have been doing a lot of research, about programs, about advice on whether or not to pursue a PhD or graduate school and various blog sites.
One in particular that I want to note is http://pgbovine.net/early-stage-PhD-advice.htm
which I stumbled upon one day during an intense google search. This author seems to have a lot of insight into the process and even wrote a memoir about his experience over 6 years. That's a lot of dedication and reminiscing!
For now, this is all I've got but I plan to maintain this to some degree and this should keep me accountable for goals and achievements I set for myself in the coming weeks, months, and years!
